About
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress related disorders. In this course, Dr. Peter A Levine explores how trauma not only affects the individual, but whole communities, nations, and the global community.
Dr. Levine will share the principles of Somatic Experiencing and tools we can apply to ourselves and others, including strangers and children. These skills will help prevent traumatic reactions from occurring in the aftermath of exposure to threat and overwhelm. We’ll also learn how to work with the unpredictability of natural disasters.
These tools and skills, offered in this course, will help us rebound and promote resilience during these challenging times.
Module 1: Principles of Somatic Experiencing and Trauma
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress related disorders. Dr. Peter A Levine, the developer of SE, will discuss how the naturalistic survival responses of fight, flight, freeze, and collapse relate to clinical treatment; show how SE addresses the root cause of trauma symptoms by gently releasing thwarted survival energy bound in the body; and explore the implications of Body-oriented psychotherapy and recent findings in the neurosciences on how the brain and body deals with emotional information.
Module 2: Trauma First Aid
The expression that, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” is absolutely true for trauma. Learning some basic tools can help us prevent traumatic reactions from occurring in the aftermath of exposure to threat and overwhelm. In this module we will learn some of these basic skills for ourselves and for others; especially, to help children rebound and promote resilience. These tools can even be used to help strangers in need.
Module 3: Working with Collective Trauma
Trauma affects not only the individual, but also those around us. It can affect whole communities, and (as we are learning with the present epidemic) can also affect nations and even the global community. Harnessing our creativity, and knowledge of trauma, while working collaboratively with others, we can seize on this rare opportunity for world cooperation and enduring global peace.
Module 4: Responding to Natural Disasters
Trauma often occurs as part of betrayal from the people who are supposed to protect and care for us. Natural disasters, on the other hand, occur in the absence of interpersonal trauma. Their occurrence seems to come out of nowhere and are the result, instead, of natural forces. This unpredictability can knock us off of our center. As there are several different types of natural disasters, responses to them also need to be varied.
Students who take this course will:
